Clannad – 02

So. Clannad 02.

JUST AS PLANNED EXPECTED. No wait, the wishes come true thing was just acting. Or was it? Knowing Key they’ll make a silly plot device out of it, I CAN FEEL IT.

The collection of Really Generic Harem Girls Key Style is now complete. (Or is it!?) We have:

  • The moé main heroine with a “weak body” (will we ever get an explanation for this mysterious disease?)
  • The violent, most likely tsundere girl
  • The mysterious martial-arts skilled cool girl
  • The good and nice class president girl
  • The silent genius girl, and finally
  • The token dumb loli-like girl.

IMAGINATIVE, ISN’T IT! Most of these are carbon copies of the Kanon girls (durr, as if anyone would be surprised). Someone was already starting to hope Tomoya would end up with [someone who isn’t Nagisa]. Oh how silly, harem rule #1: the main character will always end up with the first girl he meets and who is first in the OP. If a harem show breaks this rule it’s called an interesting and innovative plot twist (see the Shuffle debacle).
Also, what the christ is with Tomoya? Is he some kind of schizophrenic? HAY I HATE MY FATHER AND I’M REALLY BITTER BUT I’M WALKING AROUND SCHOOL BEING NICE TO CUTE GIRLS JUST BECAUSE A MAN’S GOTTA DO WHAT A MAN’S GOTTA DO.

Furthermore, are the people who are saying this has the best animation of any show this season blinded by their Kyoto Animation-colored sunglasses, or are their brains trying to interpolate something from all the horrible blurring of the shitty raws? I mean, there are some really good scenes but 75% of the episode is just talking heads, standard harem show style, interspersed by the scene transitions stolen from Powerpoint. What’s with this, Kyoani? Are you TRYING to get it to look like a h-game on purpose or what? Where’s the imagination and fluid animation of the Haruhi or FMP:TSR fame?

And the mysterious dead world thing and the ghost thing goes on. WHY DO YOU HAVE TO DO THIS EVERY SINGLE FUCKING TIME, KEY? You could MAYBE do decent character drama if you didn’t fucking insist on all these FUCKING PLOT DEVICES that make your scenario writers look like 14-year-olds writing bad fanfiction. Le sigh.

tl;dr: Harem feeling getting stronger, nothing else of interest happens. Character development only develops clichees. Durr. May troll more later but I’m running out of stuff to write about.

NINJA EDIT: oh, and I also like (lol not really) the standard Key beat-you-over-the-head-with-a-bag-of-cement foreshadowing. - Angry Anonymous

Myself Yourself – 02

Posted by Shin

Even though it's still too early to tell, I can't help liking this show already. Granted the fact it has bishoujos, there's something more to Myself; Yourself than just that reason alone, which explains why something like Kimikiss, which has a better looking lineup didn't leave that much of an impression on me.

The episode kicks off with Sana bumping into the ever cheerful(and moe) Aoi-chan, or should I say Aoi-san, since she is actually a year older than him which puts our hero at a loss on what to address her. Can't blame him though, since her loli-like appearance does not reflect her true age.

Anyway, in school, Sana is elected class representative along with the ever tsun-tsun Nanaka, an impromptu plan hatched by Syuuri to bring them closer together and as an excuse by Shuu to avoid the burden of being one, according to her. Their plan bore no fruition, as Nanaka still acts apathetically towards Sana, who is ignored by the former when he asked for directions to the place they are supposed to have the committee meeting. The pair end up at the library, as Nanaka wanted to kill some time before the meeting, something which librarian Aoi-chan mentions to him. Time passes and Sana realized he was left behind by Nanaka who had already went for the meeting.

Enter Hoshino Asami, who now officially doubles as a potential love interest for Sana and rival to Nanaka. She introduces herself and brings him to the audio visual room soon after. There, Sana sounds off at Nanaka, who calmly replies that she never promised him to bring him to the meeting point. Ouch.

The next day during break, Aoi-chan meets up with Sana, who is together with the twins and offers him a homemade bento and promises to make him lunch every day. Lucky bastard. They all have food together, and like a scene from a visual novel where the protagonist gains love points with a heroine, an awkward moment happens between Aoi-chan and Sana leaving the former blushing. +5 love points to Aoi-chan counter. Damn you, Sana.

Later in the afternoon, the Nanaka meets with Asami, who asks her to pass a book of some sort to Sana. Just as she leaves, Sana enters the classroom and has a brief chat with Asami, to the bemusement of Nanaka. Expecting to be bitched at(hehe), Sana explains to Nanaka on why they both seem so close, to which she says it does not concern her. Yeah, right.

At the end of the day, and the most significant part of the episode(we call this triggering a flag in visual novels), Sana heads off to the music room to recover his pencil case. Coincidentally, Nanaka is there as well, as she was asked by the music teacher to get some handouts. He sees a piano there and instinctively sits down and plays a very familiar tune, which is none other than the very same tune Nanaka played for him during the farewell party. Watching him from the next room, Nanaka is surprised by it, and just as he finishes playing, Asami shows up and claps, complementing him. Sana then explains to her on the significance of that tune and how it is so special to him, as even though he's not played the piano in a long time and has forgotten to play anything else, he still remembers it. +10 to Nanaka love point counter. The scene that follows up also has lead me to suspect that he has also gained at least +5 love points with Asami, as just as he presses a key on the piano, the wind blows and sakura petals enter the music room through the window. Oh, so dramatic. Below is a graphical representation by yours truly of what it would have looked like if we were playing the visual novel and had to decide on our next move.

The next morning, Sana heads off to school with Aoi-chan as usual, and is greeted by the twins the same way before, which is getting slapped in the back. This time however, Nanaka also wishes him good morning, much to his surprise.

Yup, looking great so far. We've already got the rival character, which leaves us with that twin tail loli in the OP left. Nice to see Nanaka showing a little of her dere-dere side at the end, although things will start getting real interesting in the next episode, where everyone goes for a field trip. You can bet there's bound to be some tension between Nanaka and Asami as they begin competing for Sana's affection. Also, swimsuit episode! I cream my pants in anticipation of Aoi-chan wearing one. Shin out.

Clannad – 01

I was never a Key fan and have never watched Kanon or Air, but seeing as how I've not found anything that I could really like just yet, I gave this a go and was pleasantly surprised. Being an anime based on a visual novel, the animator has the task to retain the original feel to appease fans of the game and at the same time cater to the general audience. Falling in the latter category, and without the high expectations from a fan, I somewhat enjoyed the first episode and will most likely see this to the end.

The story begins with Okazaki Tomoya, the male lead, lamenting on his mundane life who wishes for a change of pace. On the way to school, he encounters a strange girl(central heroine detected) who at first appears to be talking to herself, about how much she loves the school which they both go to, although it's hard for things not to change and that the happy moments will not last . Concluding that she is talking to someone in her mind, Tomoya suggests to her to seek out new and happy things. The girl is taken aback by this and after his urging, they both head off to school together.

In school, he finds his friend Sunohara Youhei being pummeled by the rugby team players but is then saved by the dorm manager, Sagara Misae. The two guys head back to Youhei's room where Tomoya attempts to provoke the rugby players, who so happen to live next door, much to Youhei's anguish. Seeing at how his friend reacted, Tomoya ceases to tease his friend and to him, another pointless day has passed.

The next day in class, he is approached by the class president Fujibayashi Ryou who tells him that he was late for class again and not to be so tardy next time. He brushes it off, prompting Ryou to take out a pack of cards to read his fortune. She tells him he will be late again the following day yet again, as he will lose track of time after having a romantic meeting with a girl. Cue Ryou’s older sister Kyou, who barges in thinking that Tomoya is bullying Ryou. After clarifying what just took place, Ryou gives a sarcastic smirk and wishes him good luck.

During break, Tomoya finds the strange girl that he met the other day and questions why she is eating alone. She doesn't reply him but instead tells about how she used to had plenty of friends and how she got along with the teachers, but due to the long break she took due to an illness, she is held back for another year, whereas everyone else has already graduated. She also lets Tomoya know about her desire to join the drama club but is unable to do so due to her weak body. Perhaps feeling for her plight, Tomoya encourages her to do so. The pair then head off to the field where there is some sort of commotion involving some bikers from another school. A long haired girl confronts them, and just as Tomoya was about to lend a hand, he is stopped by the girl's classmates, who tell him that the girl is Sakagami Tomoyo, a 2nd year student who had just transferred and can take care of herself. She proves this by easily dispatching of the bikers with a flurry of kicks.

Tomoya then tells the girl about how she and Tomoyo is in a similiar situation, although the latter is much more popular, therefore it's really depending on the person. Break time ends, and the girl formally introduces herself as Furukawa Nagisa. Later on, Youhei drags Tomoya to confront Tomoyo accusing her of orchestrating the incident earlier to make herself look good. Youhei lunges at Tomoyo, which prompts Tomoya to recall on a rumor regarding this strong girl that had showed up. Unsurprisingly, Youhei was floored by Tomoya with ease.

In the afternoon, Tomoya goes to the drama club where he meets Nagisa standing outside the door. She enters the room only to find out it was vacant. Patting her on the head, Tomoya tells Nagisa about how he had forgotten that the club has stopped their activities earlier in the year., but tells her it can be restarted later anyway. Nagisa asks him why he is being so kind to her, despite only having just known one another. Tomoya shrugs and tells her that he doesn't really know why.

Nagisa then invites Tomoya to the bakery that her family owns, which is also where she lives. After a hilarious exchange with her parents they sit down to have dinner together. Tomoya then tells her he found it strange that her family bonded with one another so well. Surprised, Nagisa tells him that it is something normal, not knowing what his family's condition is. Tomoya heads home only to find that his drunkard father had passed out and just as he asks him to lie down properly, Tomoya is disgusted by his old man and runs out. Tomoya reveals that his father has been this way ever since his mother died in a car accident. After running aimlessly, he finds himself back at the bakery where he sees Nagisa, who asks him if he wanted to go to a place where wishes are granted.

An eventful first episode, to say the least. Already I'm liking both Kyou and Tomoyo already, since they seem to be the embodiment of th tsundere archetype, which sits at the top of my fetish list. Apart from that, the story seems decent enough, although I have no clue where they're heading at, so I'm going to continue watching for at least a couple more episodes before deciding if this is a keeper. Shin out.

Myself; Yourself – 01

Posted by Shin

Based on a visual novel(aren't they always?) of the same title and featuring character designs from the person who brought us Futakoi and Happy Lesson, Myself; Yourself is a story that revolves around Sana Hidaka, who after leaving his hometown of Sakuranomori for 5 years, returns only to find out that while it has stayed the same over that time period, certain things, such as the people he knows, has changed. So far so generic.

Well, based on the first episode alone, it does look like it's going to be another one of those harem animes, but if School Days had taught us anything, it's best to sit through at least a couple of episodes before coming to such a conclusion.

As for the story, after coming home, Sana heads off looking for a place to rent, only to bump into one of his childhood friends, the clumsy yet adorable bespectacled Aoi. After catching up on old times, Sana heads to school the next day where he is put in the same class as his other close friends, twins Syuuri and Syuusuke. During break, the three are approached by another person, whom Sana remembers as the shrine maiden from the day before and greets her as though she was some stranger, incurring her wrath. An unexpected slap to the face follows up, to which Sana finds out that she is none other than Nanaka, his childhood crush(?)

Hmm, not bad. Being the shallow minded person that I am, I guess I'll be following the show after all, if just for the pretty girls. Lulz. A quick rundown on the heroines:

Aoi - Holy shit, a loli-faced kyonyuu megane dojikko all rolled into one. This bookworm is a walking pillar of turn-ons that will easily be a (male)fan favorite, if you take into account her voice and housewife characteristics as well. 10/10 on the moe scale.

Syuuri - Can't really tell what archetype she is supposed to represent, but if this twin is anything like her younger brother, I'm guessing she's the spunky tomboy sort, with a slight tsun-tsun side. 7/10 on the moe scale, since I don't really dig this archetype, although given the fact she's voiced by Yukari Tamura makes me happy fanboy. Hehe.

Nanaka - It's evident from the flashback Sana had that she is the central female heroine, being his crush and all. It's worth noting that despite being tsundere, the Nanaka of yesteryear was someone who is shy. Perhaps something happened along the way that caused a change in personality. 9/10 on the moe scale, given the fact she's also a miko. Will probably score higher once she shows her dere-dere side.

Judging from the intro, there will be more girls later in the story, although I really hope this won't turn into a crappy harem anime that's purely relying on fanservice to cater to the audience. With a high profile staff involved, this could very well be this season's sola. Shin out.

Nodame Cantabile 01

Posted by gaiden

Initially I wanted to write a summary of the entire series instead of going through it by episodes because I'd reckon that lots of them had already finished this series. I changed my mind later because I want to focus a little on the music performed in the series.

Reading from the title, those who had musical background could have guessed that it's related to (classical) music.

This series is adapted from the manga with the same title, by Ninomiya Tomoko. Before the airing of this (anime) series, I had read about this manga gaining popularity in Japan and receiving awards as well. I was highly interested with a little doubt on how it would be as I was pretty unconvinced on how did Tomoko-san managed to display the ambience and characters of the mentioned pieces in the manga.

However, I did not read the manga; not even watching the dorama adapted from it as well. I only picked up the series when Shin was telling how good it is, even for someone who do not has any musical knowledge. Taking his words, I watched the first episode and boy, I was hooked!

Ore-sama Chiaki-sama.

As usual, the first few episodes will introduce the characters bit by bit. It might be a little boring for those who find it hard to appreciate classical music but with the comedian scenes (mostly Nodame's unique reaction) injected into it makes the series alot livelier.

Nodame-chan ~

There were two pieces played in this first episode which are Mozart's Sonata in D Major for two pianos; and Beethoven's Pathetique. Both pieces were not alien to me as I had heard the former in Ouran High School Host Club (where Shiro played with the girl he likes - episode 6) while the latter was often played at the beginning of almost each episodes in Love Revolution dorama. I was even slightly trembling upon hearind the familiar tunes. There are other pieces used as background music but I can't recognize any of them thus I do not know the pieces. If yuu want to find it out, yuu can check it out at wikipedia. I will only mention pieces that are played by the characters most of the time.

Playing Mozart's sonata.

Another factor that made me really love this anime is the CG quality. It was impressive! It actually demonstrate all the accurate notes played on the keys, if yuu get what I mean. If yuu don't, best is watch the series yurself. X3

Wonderful CG.

Romeo x Juliet

Posted by Evern

The concept of literature of being well boring and dull has finally been broken? With the release of Romeo x Juliet this spring, many have been surprised its outcome. Although being a well-known literature material originally composed by William Shakespeare, this anime does not bear as much boring scenes compared to its written version? Is the modification of the plot and additional action/fights in this anime the source of its attraction? However nothing matters as long it’s a good interesting anime ;)

Romeo x Juliet!

The story starts off very different from Shakespeare’s work, Laertes Montague as head of the House of Montague ordered the massacre of the House of Capulet and seized control of Neo Verona, spreading lies about the corruption of the Capulets to justify himself and tricked everyone in the city. As the new ruler of Neo Verona, He believes it is the right of the Montague House to oppress and exploit the commoners. Those who joined him and agreed with his ways and methods were made nobles. Montague then ordered to kill every single descendent of the Capulet House. Lucky enough, young Juliet along with her best friend Cordelia was saved by the Captain of the Capulet’s Guards, Conrad.

After barely escaping Montague’s massacre 14 years ago, Juliet was taught to hid her gender and name. She then disguised as a male character also known as Odin spending her time with Antonio ( Conrad’s grandson) saving innocent commoners from the castle guards as a heroic figure known as the “Red Whirlwind” with very little memory of her past and identity. On the night of the Rose Ball, she was then asked to put on a dress accompanying Emilia to the ball. After seeing the interior of the castle she recalls a little of her childhood and runs of to the courtyard after seeing Montague from a distant. Taking a breath by the fountain in the courtyard is when Romeo first meets “Juliet” with a Irises in her hand. The Irises is used to represent the House of Capulet whilst the Rose is used to portray the House of Montague.

However all fun ends early, on Juliet’s 16th birthday she was then told of her secret heritage and presented with the sword of the House of Capulet by Conrad. After much pain and suffering Juliet then vows to take down the Montague House for the sake of the people. Although saying this, her love for Romeo is not wavered. Soon Romeo finds out of her identity and promised to create a place where the both of them could live. They both flee away from Neo Verona but were caught when Lord Montague issued a search for his son.

Returning to Neo Verona, Juliet was caught in prison while Romeo was given a harsh lecture. Core members of the Capulet Restoration Faction, Francisco and Curio, along with Antonio quickly came to Juliet’s rescue. However it was Romeo who became the true hero securing Juliet’s escape. Furious at Romeo’s actions, Lord Montague then banishes his son to a forsaken mine outside of Neo Verona where prisoners were worked to their death. Learning the truth of his father, Romeo works hard in hope to one day end his father’s cruel-some ruling. Juliet continues her escape along with Francisco, Curio and Antonio away from Neo Verona.

escalus.jpg

Ophelia the keeper of “Escalus”.

Perhaps it is the change of plot and the insertion of fantasies and mystique creatures in this anime that leads much excitement to its viewers. The subbed version of the anime is currently at episode 15 while the raws are at 17. Much excitement is to be anticipated in this featured anime. What will become of both Romeo and Juliet? What’s the story behind the two great mystique trees, “Escalus” and its un-aging caretaker Ophelia? Will the anime end with the suicide of both Romeo and Juliet just like the work of William Shakespeare? Well its all to be answered in the future episodes! Be sure to watch this great exciting series of Romeo x Juliet. Evern out.
