Myself Yourself – 11

Posted by Shin

It's been a while since I last posted on Myself; Yourself, as I felt there wasn't much worth mentioning, with the exception of last week's eventful episode. This time however, the brick shittin' , tear sheddin' moments for this episode reminds me of why I love this show so much. Everything past this point is going to contain major plot spoilers, so be warned.

Previously on Myself; Yourself, the senile old lady finally snapped and tried to mutilate Syuri, only to have Asami intervene and receive the stabbing instead, which lands her in the hospital. Sana visits her the following day, bringing gifts. Asami then comments on the irony of having to visit someone hospital and actually ending up being admitted there. Perhaps, she says, it was a punishment from the gods. The puzzled Sana is then thrown into further bewilderment when Asami reveals to him that the anonymous letter was her doing. When questioned as to why she did it, she drops the bomb on him(and me) by saying that it all it began after she confessed to Syuri(OMG YURI) a year ago but was then rejected outright. Expecting the latter to ignore her after that, the ever kind Syuri acts as though nothing has happened and continues being good friends with her, and although Asami still bore some resentment, she caved in and decided to play the role of a good friend as well.

Everything went awry after the Asami saw Syuri crying at the amusement park, an expression that Shuu only gets to see. This triggered the jealous Asami's vindictive nature and so she decided to make the pair suffer by sending the letter as well as scribbling the love umbrella on the chalkboard. Despite all the spite, she wonders why she took the blow meant for Syuri when the old lady when berserk. Sana then tells her that this was her true self and Asami, feeling a tinge of regret after that, cries.

The twins make their timely visit, to which Asami takes a moment to reveal everything to Syuri in private. The guys on the other hand spent that time at the courtyard talking, when Shuu brings Nanaka up, saying that she seems to have warmed up. Sana then tells him about the promise he made to her about being with her forever. Although it was conceited, Shuu comments, it was actually great of him. Syuri then runs out crying, embracing Shuu, as Sana just looks on, knowing very well what just took place.

The next day at school, the twins informs their friends that Syuri will be leaving for London soon. Aoi mentions that it was still okay, since it wasn't eternal farewell. Later in class, Sana finds the twins missing and it suddenly hits him that, the pair has decided to elope run away, taking into consideration what Shuu said to him the previous day and his facial expression earlier at lunch.

We find the twins about to board the train, when Sana suddenly shows up in front of them, but it was too late. Just as he was about to leave the station, Sana bumps into Aoi's mother and borrows his bike. [Dramatic Moment] Sana then cycles with all his might to the same railway bridge where Shuu first said his farewells many years ago, and utters the same line back[/Dramatic Moment]

Wow, what a great episode. Certainly didn't expect that bit with Asami, as I merely expected her to play the supportive role of just making Nanaka green with envy, but she turns out to be more than that, and an antagonist at that. It was sad to see the Wakatsuki twins leave like that, and the way writers did the farewell was commendable. Judging from the preview, we'll be heading back to Nanaka's route, which leaves Aoi without one, who incidentally is the only one without any issues whatsoever. Is it safe to say that Aoi is nothing more than a fanservice character? Who knows. Shin out.

Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann – 27

Posted by Shin

I don't really know what to make of this episode. On one hand, I'm glad we weren't slapped with a mindfuck ending, but on the other hand, the show left me somewhat underwhelmed as I had expected much more from it.

For the most part, I couldn't have hoped for a better ending than this, as it was very complete and concluded everything on a high note, although as mentioned, not the way I wanted it too. Sigh.

A run through of the finale:

First half was a mind imploding final duel between the titular Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann against the Anti Spiral, which is revealed to be an entity of like-minded beings that share a single consciousness. The battle takes place on, wait for it, a galaxy. That's right, two galactic sized monstrosities fighting one another on top of a plane consisting of stars and planets, which shouldn't sound too odd at this point, considering the nature of this show, where laws of physics do not exist.

For this clash, our heroes throw everything they've got at the enemy, each whipping out their individual specialty, be it Yoko's high powered anti-Ganmen rifle, Viral's longsword or Attenborough's missle barrage, although it does little to subdue their foe. All seems lost until the fight takes them to the galaxy where Earth is, in which the inhabitants witness the epic struggle their saviors are putting up against the Anti Spiral, cheering them on.

This prompts Lord Genome to make his final stand, as he separates himself from the main body of the Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann(TTGL), and along with Lazengann, he absorbs a direct blast from the enemy. He in turns it into raw spiral energy which is then channeled through the TTGL, causing it to go into overload mode, spawning drills from every part of its body.

A case of now or never, Simon lunges head on at the Anti Spiral and deals the final blow with the minute Lagann, after every evolution of the Gurren Lagann was resisted by the enemy's defenses. With its imminent defeat, the Anti Spiral parts with a request asking Simon to protect the universe.

With a massive explosion that signals the end of the Anti Spiral, everyone back home cheers for their heroes, with Rossiu informing them that Spirals throughout the galaxy are cheering them on as well, as proof of the number of allies they have gained along the way.

The Dai Gurren Brigade returns triumphant and the long overdue marriage between Simon and Nia takes place, although their joy was shortlived, as being a virtual lifeform created by the Anti Spirals, she begins to dissipate into nothingness, telling Simon that she loves him. Taking with him Kamina's cape and the ring he gave Nia, Simon bids farewell to everyone and entrusts everything to Rossiu.

20 years on, we see the future, possible only through the liberation our heroes had fought for so hard, where an aged Rossiu is talking to Leeron on the differing ideals of different Spirals, when Simon's name was brought up. Leeron then tells Rossiu that Simon is watching from afar. Next is Yoko, who is now the headmistress of the very same school she taught ages ago, listening to a transmission to the now grown up Nakimu, who is now a Grappal pilot under Darry and Gimmy's guidance. We then see Viral, who is now captain of the Chouginga Gurren Lagann leaving for another galaxy as Earth's representative. Night falls and a little boy struggling to crack open a coconut with his drill is approached by a cloaked man who teaches him the proper way to do it. The now impressed kid is amazed, prompting the man to utter a familiar line that goes "Who do you think I am" although he stops midway as the boy is no longer paying attention to him. The man then realizes he now indeed nobody and joins the boy in watching several Grappals launch. The boys tells the man of his dreams of one day joining them as he describes how all the lights of heaven are actually stars. This man is none other than Simon, who reveals his face, with Boota still loyally by his side. The end.

Damn it. Gainax left me in absolute despair when they killed Nia off right after her wedding and turning the man who challenged and defeated a God-like being into a homeless bum. Why couldn't they have made the epilogue the same as the first 5 minutes of episode 1 instead? Hopefully, this matter will somehow be addressed in the rumored OVA, which I really hope provides an alternate ending of some kind. Whatever the case may be, this show has now become one of my all time favorites, with its magnificent animation quality and story which escalated exponentially from just plain decent to epic proportions in such a small period of time. Couple this with its memorable characters and often a times uplifting and inspiring moments and you've got the contender for the best anime of this year. Thank you Gurren Lagann, it has been a splendid journey. Shin out.

Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann – 25

Kiyoh's kid eventually grew up on Earth. As nightfall approached, the stars would glow brighter than ever, since Kiyoh moved out of the bright Kamina City to escape the raucous involved with city life. Her child would look out of their cabin, up at the twinkling stars, the vast sky containing a new world the child couldn't even begin to fathom.

She would excitedly stare into the starry night and ask, "Why do the stars twinkle?"
Kiyoh would smile and laughingly reply, "That's the fighting spirit of the ones fighting for our future."

Her daughter would slowly tilt her head to one side and inquire, "How far away are the stars, Mommy?"
Kiyoh would gently take a glimpse at the sky and say, "Far, far away. The lights from the stars take years to rea-"

And as she spoke, a star began to fall. One at first. Then two at once. Then two that appeared to be stuck to each other. Stars continued to streak throughout the sky, disappearing into the black night, their warm aura gradually fading into black. Seconds passed, and the stars continued to fall in greater amounts.

The child beamed at the sky, exclaiming, "Look Mommy! The stars! They're falling..."

A raindrop plopped on her head. Lightly touching her hair where the raindrop landed, she looked up to her mother. Her mother was glaring into the night sky, her eyes desperately and silently pleading to the stars. She should have known years ago, but she refused to believe her instincts, and she silenced her inner cries and warnings until now. As tears were rolling down her face, she asked, "Do... do you remember Uncle Kittan?"

The child gave returned an odd look at first, in confusion of her mother's tears. She was unsure of what to say, but she eventually stammered out a, "N-n...no..."

Kiyoh kneeled down, hugged her child, gasping for breath in between cries of sorrow. She planted her face into her child's hair, her tears matting the hair upon her face. Glancing up to the sky again, she saw the largest star in the sky fade away. And in her mind, she saw the greatest star, the King Kittan, slowly fade away as well. - Anonymous

Or the prelude to 40%* if you will. After the climatic battle against the Anti Spirals in the previous episode, the crew return to Earth to make preparations for their final stand against their greatest foe. Viral officially joins the Gurren Brigade and is welcomed with open arms. Despite having emerged victorious with minimal casualties, Rossiu is disheartened and leaves everyone behind to visit his birthplace.

Better times... ;_;

Best explanation ever.

Kinon informs Simon about this and they both set out looking for him, fearing the worse. We move over to Rossiu who meets up with his old village chief, and laments about humanity. They both talk about the holy scriptures that was handed to him back then and Rossiu commented about how he is unable to read them because they don't match any ancient alphabets in his database, and dismisses it as nothing but a mere joke. Uh, you can't read it so it's crap? Lawl.

BAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

After that fleeting moment, Rossiu proceeds to do what he came back for in the first place, which is end it all. Unfortunately, Simon arrives in time to sock him with one, which is long overdue to say the least. With Simon talking some sense into Rossiu, the latter becomes likable again, this time with Kinon to go with it.

This show has just got so many quotable lines!

Rossiu's popularity rating just went up by 32%

With that crisis averted, the crew makes final preparations to leave, although Rossiu stays behind to manage things on Earth. After a short briefing and a farewell, we see the Gurren Brigade in space, on the Terra Cathedral, now known as the Hyper Galaxy Dai-Gurren, with a costume change to boot!

As you can see for yourself, the final arc begins next week, and this being Gainax, I wonder if things are going to end well. In any case, remember the 40%? Rumors have it that 40% of the show's total budget went towards animating the last 3 episodes, so we can expect something really out of the ordinary and of high quality. Shin out.

Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS – 17

Posted by Shin

This episode pretty much makes up for the blandness of the past episodes, save the one when the Numbers first appeared. Scaglietti finally sorties every member of the Numbers and even Lutecia and company to launch a full scale assault on the TSAB headquarters. Going on any further would be spoiling this great episode, so I'll just post caps instead.

strikers17-copy.png

The highlight of this week's episode comes after a certain member of the Mobile Six Squadron is captured by the Numbers, triggering Subaru into Bankai mode, so to speak.

snapshot20070815190002.jpg

The real shocker however, it not Subaru's sudden burst of raw power, but what her battle with the Numbers will reveal, which is unexpected to say the least. Also, speaking of powerups, Caro finally summons the fabled Voltaire(cool name), which is no more than a Bahamut Zero ripoff, but hey, it's cool nonetheless.

snapshot20070815190818.jpg

With only 9 episodes to go, I hope they keep the pace up, which is what made A's so enjoyable in the first place and the one factor that set this series apart from other magical girl shows; awesome hot blooded mage battles. My boss was vying for a fanservice episode, but it's kinda too late now, which is sad fine I guess, that is of course if they maintain this and show us more intense fighting. Shin out.

Word Of The Day : Ronery

Lonely. A word used by people imitating stereotypical asians that are lonely. L's are pronounced R's like "Herro", or "Rittre".

Said by Kim Jong Il in the movie Team America: World Police by the creators of South Park.

"I'm so ronery, so ronery, so ronery and sadry arone." -UrbanDictionary.com
