Kinomoto Sakura

I had the unfortunate privilege of watching Cardcaptor Sakura dubbed in Malay back in the day, but because I was not a full-on weeaboo at that time, it did little to stop me from loving this show and its main character. Sakura was the closest thing I had to being the first waifu, though as fate would have it, her seiyuu would eventually voice my true love about a decade later.

By the time I watched Chrono Crusade, I would have seen quite a number of little girls in anime, but this was probably the first time when I would consider one to be so... erotic. Sexual innuendos have always been a staple with the Ar Tonelico franchise since its birth on the Playstation 2 and though the above resounds the gripes of reviewers jaded with the amount fanservice associated with series, I, for one, welcome its current gen iteration Considering that the last JRPG I played was Dragon Age 2, Ar Tonelico Qoga: Knell of Ar Ciel injects a much needed breast of fresh ass to the otherwise stagnating genre You play as Aoto, an upstart Steeplejack apprentice, which is sort of a fancy way of saying construction worker. Much like every other protagonist before him, Aoto's peaceful life making ends meet comes to an abrupt end when he unwittingly involves himself in a conspiracy beyond his imagination. What started off as a promise to escort a moeblob love interest to safety eventually escalates into a long drawn quest to save the planet from itself. Joining his party is a flat-chested tsundere who is also a love interest, a rather fetching girly boy and a doctor with sister complex. So far so JRPG.

Battles are of a snappy real time pace, but this starts to crawl even fairly early on because your party never does much damage to begin with. You will then have to rely on the Rayveteils, or song maidens, as they are the true powerhouse. Like any form of artillery, they bombard your enemies though you are required to synchronise your attacks to the rhythm of the battle tune. Once you achieve a certain number of beats, you are given the option to "purge" the Reyvateil's clothing, which not only provides for excellent eye candy but power up your spells. Given enough time, they can even one-shot endgame bosses. You don't mess with someone who is able to rain down enemies with confectionery. As you might have guessed, they are fragile when left alone, so it is your duty as vanguards to protect the girls from molesters monsters.

The game has a relatively low difficulty curve, so you could probably try playing it with one hand, leaving the other free to savour the stripping sequences... However, this eventually comes to a point where you would have to repeat the process several times within a single fight, so if you will mostly likely just turn it off to save time. Fret not though, as all unlocked sequences go to the gallery for future perusal

So while combat is nothing to write home about, the main attraction to me has always been the cast themselves. This time however, the introduction of multiple personas for the two main heroines mean less time is dedicated to flesh out their respective character development. Therefore, it is very unfortunate that these personas fade into obscurity after barely making an impact on the main plot, as they are all so interesting.

Because Ar Tonelico has always been a cleverly disguised visual novel with RPG elements, a huge portion of character development takes places within the Cosmospheres, virtual simulations of the heroine's minds which the hero can explore. The true selling point of the series, Cosmospheres reveal much of the heroines' traits and personalities, adding a great level of depth to the characters, as you traverse deeper into their Cosmospheres.

Not too dissimilar to Dominic Cobb's role in Inception, your primary objective is to dive into the girls' subconscious to help them come to terms with whatever psychological issues that they might be facing. Every successful level cleared leads to a paradigm shift, allowing you to strengthen your relationship with the girl, which in turn sets up their respective endings. Occasionally, you will even stumble across little tidbits of information such as the location of the girl's most erogenous region... Things do get a little naughty within the Cosmospheres, and Gust has included a Panic button that replaces the scene with random non-related images, in case someone walks into you. Just like one of my Japanese porn games

As you are not expected to make an actual decision until late into the game, it makes choosing a girl that much more difficult, knowing full well you will be depriving the other person of her happiness. While easily rectified via multiple playthroughs, I applaud the writers for being able to elicit emotional investment of this degree from me, which in my opinion, is the one of the bases for all good role playing games.

It puzzles me greatly that all the other reviews I have read for this game fail to mention the great soundtrack that accompanies it, though admittedly not quite on par with its predecessors. The background music is average at best, but the vocal scores are where the Ar Tonelico franchise shines. The producers have gone to the extent of creating a language from scratch known as Hymmnos for the many hymns during the course of the game. Each piece is beautifully composed to reflect the the emotions of the Reyvateils, which are often times melancholic. Then there's the following:

Do not be fooled; it is actually a hymn for peace that was able to bring an entire fleet of battleships crashing down. I am guessing that their penis engines malfunctioned and they came crashing down Shikata Akiko reprises her role by providing the vocals for a majority of the hymns, along with other veterans like Shimotsuki Haruka.

Supposedly the final game in the series, I find Qoga to be a decent finale, despite some quirky design choices. If you are already a fan, then you would not care what I have to say anyway, but for newcomers, do yourself a favour and play the previous games first before delving into this. There is actually a lot I could have nitpicked on, but given the general decline in quality console RPGs these days, they are hardly the game-ruining ones that plague titles like Final Fantasy XIII, so I am still very satisfied. Not a classic by a long shot, but good enough to wrap up the trilogy.

P.S It took me roughly month or so to complete the two main routes, which is pretty much all I have been doing since. Probably another week before I can start going back to watching Japanese cartoons full time again

Folks, I ask of you. Do not judge the childhood friend. Spend a moment to look at her face ,that extra second the show just would not spare, instead spent on France's breasts and other fanservice scenes, and feel something for her. Continue hating her, if you will, for her desperate abuse of someone she loves, her attitude, her archetype, or have your heart opened to something you never saw before. I only request, nay, plead - that you spend an extra second considering her. Love her, hate her. I won't say which, it could be either, in my case as well. But look into those eyes, into that soul, and see more than she is being forced to be. Do not forget the childhood friend. She will never forget you.

Folks, it is no secret that I am a faggot. That is why I strive to push the boundaries of my faggotry to great heights in order to become a faggot like no one ever was. The opportunity to up the ante of my faggotry levels presented itself in a form of maid outfit loaned to me by a cabal of self-styled trolls, led by the ubiquitous Eighteenth Guest.

I'll say it first, this was a rather half-assed attempt at crossplaying, which can be attributed to it being all done last minute, not to mention the fact that I wasn't sure if the benefactor for the outfit was going to follow through.

It wasn't until on the morning of the second day of the convention did I have confirmation that I would be receiving the rest of my kit. That alone wouldn't have been an issue had I bothered to prep up, which is to say that I forwent shaving.

As with my other attempts at faggotry, the purpose of this venture has always been to incite lulz, but I was somewhat pleasantly surprised by how it turned out. While there certainly was the intended reaction of setting people's retinas on fire, I too had a fair share of "Not bads" and "Almost theres" Certainly words of praise, considering it was all done in good fun. Sadly, the children were less accepting of queers, as I scared them away and even made a baby cry.

There were also those who chose to express their approval through less subtle means, by fondling and groping my nubile body, though I was mostly okay with it as they were, for the most part, girls. Yes, I attempted something similar in the past, which was a good three years ago, when I was still an undergraduate. Looking back at those photos, also taken by an albeit less proficient Setsuna, I was hit with a certain sense of nostalgia. Where do I go from here? I would certainly like to try this again, but with more effort going into the areas I have neglected this time around. Hello readers. I have been blogging Japanese cartoons for quite a while now, but I need to ask something important of you. My little sister has been sickly her entire life as she suffers from a rare condition known as Keyaidus Syndrome. I am currently commuting to work from home right now and can spare little time to attend to her. My mother homeschools my little sister, as she is unable to go out much due to severe lethargy.

She mostly spends her time watching anime and reading manga with me. She also enjoys immersing herself in the visual novels that I download for her, such as Kana: Little Sister. To cut to the chase...her condition is getting worse fast due to the aforementioned congenital disease.

Her favourite manga is Gunslinger Girl, as she is able to relate to the lives of the heroines. She loves to pretend that she is one of the cyborg girls where I am her handler and we are living an interesting life in Italy. We have both been waiting for quite a while for someone to translate Volume 12 and 13. If I am not mistaken, 13 is the last volume for the entire series.

If you are lacking the means of translating manga, I implore that you make a donation so I am able to commission scanlators for the task. Personally, I wish I did not have to resort to this, but my family is poor and whatever income that I make goes towards my little sister's medical bills and broadband internet.

Please, if I could ask for one thing of this world in my entire it would be the translation of the last few volumes to materialise so me and my sister can read it together.

If you have dropped by in the past day or so, you would have noticed that the site was inaccessible, just one of many instances that have been taking place. Apparently, according to my hosts, this site has been overloading their CPUs to the point that they have no choice but to suspend my account. As my hosts would(could?) not actually trace the root of the problem and give me a clear idea as to how to resolve the matter, the blog is now essentially a ticking time bomb that is prone to suspension at any given time.

This time however, my hosts have finally given the ultimatum that if this was to occur again, they will remove my account permanently, unless I switched to dedicated hosting. No deal. To cut to the chase, I am now considering pulling the kill switch and starting anew with free hosting.

My hosts probably foresaw this and have kindly provided a zipped backup of the blog, so I can fondly reminisce all the stuff that has been posted here, therefore reducing the emotional attachments I have to this site. It has been fun messing around here, but I suppose it is time for me to return to being a plebian

For the time being, the site is still under observation and I am still paying for monthly hosting, but given how volatile it is now, do expect the site to be down soon. Forever. By then however, I would probably be getting ready for the transition back to WordPress.com.
