Would Genderbending K-ON! Work?

I've always been a fan of the whole genderbending concept, since among other things, it makes being gay for certain characters acceptable... K-ON! is the latest Kyoto Animation offering to go through this treatment, though whether or not its popularity will ever reach the feverish heights that Suzumiya Haruhi attained remains to be seen. I'm not particularly hopeful myself, but here is my 2 cents anyway:

Her dream has finally came true.
Admittedly, the journey wasn't easy. There were times where she felt hopelessness, there were times when she felt doubt. Of course, there were times when she started thinking "just what did we get ourselves into?"
But thanks to Hirasawa Yui's membership, the light music club Tainaka Ritsu has always dreamed of came true.
Together with their keyboard player (and token wealthy girl) Kotobuki Tsumugi, and her childhood friend Akiyama Mio; Ritsu proclaimed their final goal - to play in the Budokan before they graduate as high school students!
So Mio I’m Gonna Die!

Colour me surprised! Just when I thought I had Mio's personality down to pat as a straight-man coodere of sorts, her unexpectedly introverted nature threw me off. Heck, even Yui acknowledges the latter's ℳℴℯ❤ levels , as she senses her popularity rating taking a dive, now that Mio not only takes the crown for hottest character but also the cutest. Search your soul, you know this to be true.
