Anime You Won’t Find Anywhere Else. Ever. I Think.
Posted by: Shin in Miscellaneous, tags: Lulz, Rants
While I’ve always fancied myself as someone who’s well versed with anime releases, a trip to my local bookstore(of all places) proved how wrong I was. Lying there in the pile of anime DVDs were titles that looked familiar but were either sequels and spinoffs that I’ve never even heard of nor were they listed in places like ANN. Below are some of the titles that were on sale and short sypnosises on what they might have been about.

Wolf’s Rain: Spice and Wolf
Horo is called forth by her brethren 300 years into the future from her eternal slumber to guide them to Paradise, a safe haven accessible only to their kind. Many obstacles stand in their way, including environmental hazards from a nuclear devastated planet, as most of the world has already been turned into a sandy wasteland. Horo and the remaining survivors also face threats from hostile humans who deem them as abominations of the earth. Horo must once again rely on her wits and great powers as The One Wolf God, which can only be achieved by harnessing the power of the Spice; which extends life and heighthens consciousness, imperative to their survival.

Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha: Vivio’s Vendetta
Five years following the Saint’s Cradle incident, everyone at the Time-Space Administration Bureau are killed in one fell swoop by their greatest nemesis yet, an A.I by the name of Gotterdammerung . In order to save her adoptive mother’s life and safeguard the universe, Vivio must travel 15 years into the past via the Yggdrasill, an ancient Lost Lagia artifact that allows the user to manipulate the space-time continuum. Unleashing Raising Heart’s ultimate technique, the 「Nibelung Valesti」 after having inherited it from Nanoha herself, Vivio has to recruit the souls of dead mages otherwise known as Einherjars to aid her noble quest to vanquish Gotterdammerung and prevent Ragnarok; the day the the world ends.

Shigofumi: Ballad of the Death God
Much like her mentor Fumika, mail carrier Momo is assigned the task of delivering letters from the deceased to their recipients. However, Momo goes beyond the line of duty and punishes those who have caused the deaths of her patrons, Armed with Fumika’s Silverballer, which is rumored to be have been able to slay even the Gods, Momo appoints herself judge, jury and executioner, delivering justice for those which conventional law has let down.

Koi Kaze: Kamichu
Yurie Hitotsubashi is now in her final year at middle school, still fulfilling her role as a Goddess; all while juggling life as a teenager. Yurie one day finds herself attracted to Yuu, a university student from Tokyo who returned home after graduation, only to find out that he is her step brother from their father’s first marriage. Regardless of their blood ties, the two soon find themselves falling for one another. Bound by love and lust, their forbidden relationship is put to the ultimate test, when it turns out that Yuu is a Demon Prince of the Underworld, as the lovers were destined to become mortal enemies.

Pantasia
Azuma Kazuma is finally crowned best bread maker in all of Japan and now runs his very own chain of bakeries. One day in a freak accident, Kazuma tripped and fell into one of his baking ovens. When he regains consciouness, he wounds up finding himself in ancient China, together with friends and old foes alike who mysteriously made their way there as well. Kazuma must once again pit his skills and call upon his Solar Hands to face new challenges and obstacles in becoming the best baker there is, effectively altering the course of culinary history forever.

Sakura Wars: The Shugo Guardians
Together with Yaya and Rima, Amu finds herself being a member of a famous Ginza based performance troupe when she unwittingly transformed into Amulet Diamond and started singing her heart out. Not everything was what it seemed, as the troupe was a front for the Imperial Counter-X Eggs Squad, and Amu was recruited not only for her inherent talents as a performer, but also for her experience and expertise in combating X Eggs. It turns out the Easter Company has developed a new technology to extract these X Eggs from their respective hosts and mutate them into taking permanent humanoid forms with greater offensive capabilities in a bid to rule the world. To combat this new threat, the I.C.E.S have developed a similar technology to enable Amu’s Shugo Guardians to take their human forms, which are basically clones of Amu, each representing her would be self. This new evil is led by by Shin, himself a Guardian, able to transform into the much feared Amulet Corncob.
Others:

A chibi spinoff of my favorite magical girl show which I’ll pay good money for. Honest.

Blood + Rosario + Vampire

Or the sequel to an anime that never existed.
And my personal favorite; if you can’t read what the title says, that’s okay, because:

It’s printed upside down. Well there you have it, sequels to your favorite anime that miraculously have been produced without anyone noticing now available on DVD starting from a low low price of RM 14.90 onwards. Well, jokes and bullshit aside, you’ll notice that I’ve used the infamous cover bald dude from SZS to conceal the price tags, not because I’m afraid of backlash from the store I took these pictures at, but simply because I’m kind enough not to screw them over for selling these open source copies in the first place :wink: . They’ve even blantantly stuck the Certified Original Copy sticker all over, but that’s another story which I’ll not delve into, though that should give you a rough idea on how things work here in Malaysia when it comes to acquiring anime, as our options are either shelling out lots of dough for originals, or pay around 5 US Dollars for the whole thing. Perhaps I’ll write about in through some special investigative report in the future. :lol:

That. Is. Awesome. Maybe the guy(s) who are producing these boots are big fans of the anime cross over section at fanfiction.net? I, for one, would actually love to see a Saya vs. Moka fight … or any sort of “interaction” if you know what I mean.
I’ve always secretly been proud of being Malaysian when it comes to piracy because we’re so awesome at it, we’ve even released movies on DVD before the movie has actually been released. We’re just *that* good.

I LOLed. Seriously, sometimes I think that Malaysia has over taken China as the King of Bootlegged Products. I remember watching a Gundam Seed Destiny DVD that my friend bought that had Gundam Wing Zero pasted all over it.
Nice job on the Dune reference on Wolf’s Rain, not to mention VP in Nanoha. Did you photoshop her eye, or was it already that color?
June 22nd, 2008 at 2:50 am
Can we all stop buying these people? All I can do is /facepalm when I look at things like this. My friend has a small collection of this stuff that I bash him for whenever I see them.
He spends so much money on figures you would think he could buy a box set or two once in awhile.

Blood+, Rosario+Vampire, Tsukihime, etc etc…omg!!! I don’t even see them around here.
*envious of Shin*
However, how’s the quality and the subtitles? XD

well in malaysia it is impossible to get any ori anime DVD’s anyway, and my viewing habits stemmed from the pirated dvds.
and im betting that the shop is either popular bookstore or suncomics.

And I was just telling my dormmates (who all seem to be addicting themselves to Yakitate Japan his very moment) how it’s ‘called’ ‘Pantasia’ in Malaysia, lol
Maybe they’re trying to sell to people who’ll think they’re getting 2 series for the price of one -_-” Taking crossovers to the next level!

LOL. I saw these kind of DVDs too. I laugh/facepalm/smiled at it and the store owner probably thinks that I’m weird or something. So I guess that person is not an anime fan..
Anyway, might even buy it for the lulz (not really). It’s pirated, but the contents is the same as the original. Only cheaper and the quality is bad. But you don’t have the ‘feeling’ that you have from buying the originals. Not that I have ever bought one. If there is any here..

@Sion
And yeah, the funny thing was when I returned to the shop later, they mysteriously disappeared.
@karecat
They should’ve emphasised on this for the tourism campaign.
@double
Yeah well, it’s cheap.
@nckl
Indeed. Malaysia Boleh.
@Stifler
I’m glad you liked it. Anyway, those are Vivio’s original eye colors. She’s got heterochromia like Suiseiseki.
@zqube
My friend used to buy these thinking they were original, since back then they were pretty expensive.
@Hynavian
I thought you guys had Odex subs?
But yeah, the ones you’ll find in these special editions are atrocious, as they outsource them to students to do them. I know, because they offered that very job in the forums I frequent.
@Gravmech
Wow, I’ve personally never been screwed to that extent though.
@Setsuna
It’s not SunComics.
@blissmo
And he’s a lot more annoying when you see him in the original show, since he’s mainly used to cover up the ecchi parts.
@FFVIIKnight
@otou
Our bootlegs are so good, even China buys it from us. No kidding. We’re not on the US watchlist for nothing you know.
@Rokku
I would have wrote a summaryoon that if I wasn’t so lazy.
@C.I
Thanks. Well yeah, I thought if I was going to make something up, I might as well go all the way.
@serogane
I would imagine it’s just as good. That upside down copy and the alternate version of it with a different cover got snagged when I went there a second time?
@issa-sa
Now that you’ve mentioned it, maybe it was a ploy after all, and not because they were being dumb.
@Setsukyie
Say no to piracy.
@waku2
There were a lot more actually, I just didn’t bother to snap everything as I didn’t want to arouse suspicion.
@ID Sojourner
@Os
Well admittedly, these bootlegs were a source of anime before broadband came along, though they were priced almost as high as the originals back then, which made owning them a luxury.
June 23rd, 2008 at 4:37 pm
I didn’t realize Malaysia was so huge for bootlegs but I’m not entirely familiar with that market.

Now that’s what I call “Malaysia: Truly Asia; Truly Creative” (full sarcasm intended)
I remember seeing a stall selling those Hollywood movies when I was spending one holiday in Malaysia years ago and they can come up with all sort of fancy titles not even Hollywood knows about, like “Jaws 5″ (Deep Blue Sea), Indiana Jones 4 (The Mummy, not the recent genuine one with Shia Lebouf), and then there’s the classic “Star Wars Episode III: Backstroke of the West” (Don’t ask, google it yourself)
June 24th, 2008 at 10:41 pm
@Caitlin
It’s one of our biggest exports.
@izumi-kun
www
@Rakuen
Would you believe me if I told you that bootlegs are available in Akiba?
@Kinny
I’m guessing you were in our Chinatown. That place is a hotbed for titles you’ve mentioned, though as you said, it was a long time ago. Nowadays they just employ runners to approach people if they were interested in those said merchandise.

Well I’d imagine there is still a market for it. At least it’s much cheaper back then when a boxset would cost almost triple of what it is now.
@katana
