The K-ON! Franchise Progression

In what could've turned out be one of the biggest blunders in anime business history, Kyoto Animation originally wanted K-ON! to be a serious slice of life anime , Naoko Yamada has revealed.
Speaking in an interview with Newtype, Kyoto Animation director Naoko Yamada revealed that the the team has wanted to create ℳℴℯ❤shit anime - without relying on plot, characterization, good animation and the like - for years, but senior management held them back.
"With Clannad, we were dead set against it being yet another good, deep anime," Yamada told Newtype, "but the board of executives really wanted it, the compromise sort of being that we'd get some funding in exchange for doing good, meaningful anime.
"We always wanted to do ℳℴℯ❤shit anime and the board of executives saw us as more of a good, deep animation studio," he said.
"And something I'll add to that, Kyoto Animation also did not want K-ON!. They thought working on a ℳℴℯ❤shit anime was risky and [thought], 'oh my god you can't do that, it's crazy!' They were doing market research to show us we were wrong the whole time," he said.
"We had to fight for everything," chimed in K-ON! project lead, Yukiko Horiguchi. "They wanted it to be drama. Again."
Of course the Kyoto Animation's risk in letting the K-ON! team go against the surveys paid off massively, and K-ON! ended up shifting over 41,000 copies.
"It just blows us away(knowing how retarded the otakus are). I'm still reeling from it," Yamada said of the success.

“And something I’ll add to that, Kyoto Animation also did not want K-ON!.”
but… K-ON is the best thing that ever happened to my otaku life!

Search your heart. Deep down, you wished that K-ON! was a heartwarming drama that explores the relationships between girls with similar interests.
January 7th, 2010 - 05:44
Actually I only wanted the doujins, and then there were DOUJINS!! DOUGH-ZAH, DOUGH-ZAH!!!

TOO MANY JESUSES! ABORT! ABORT!!
January 7th, 2010 - 18:28
K-On is nothing more than Hannah Montana With Band The Animation. There’s nothing particularly interesting to speak of.
January 8th, 2010 - 05:10
Look past the ℳℴℯ❤!!
January 8th, 2010 - 16:52
You mean the sort that… um, MUGI would dig? ;)
January 7th, 2010 - 04:07
k on was so boring , yes k on haved some funny parts , for example the episode 5 about the young sawako , but other episodes were boring as hell like episode 2 and 3 and many others also yui isn’t funny , yui is stupid and retarded
January 7th, 2010 - 04:17
K-ON makes me angrier than it really should – think its the bitter disappointment more than anything else……I don’t like moe on the best of days either
January 7th, 2010 - 06:04
Gack, we’re not retarded…we’re just easily susceptible to cute!
I’m glad it didn’t turn out to be serious. I would have watched it anyway, but it probably would have just been forgotten.
January 11th, 2010 - 23:03
When you think about it, otakus can get pretty damn retarded if they actually buy the merchandise. 100 AUD for a Mio model? And then there’s the blu ray dvds. 25 AUD for only 2 episodes on Blu Ray? What kind of idiot company charges that price and what kind of retard would want to buy that.
Thank Jashin for pirated dvds where you can get the full season of K-on for the same price. Or better yet torrent the whole series for free so you don’t have to give money back to the company trying to rip you off.
And then there’s the matter of buying guitars just for display after watching K-On.

YUI IS NOT BALANCED FOR LEAN
January 8th, 2010 - 05:11
RAMIREZ! MAKE K-ON! GOOD!
January 7th, 2010 - 07:50
k-on is a nice entertaining anime that’s, for some moments, funny. I watched it, liked it, and now i think I’ll watch the 2nd season.
when yui is not retarded, she’s awesome and cute.
NOW, if the second season turns out to have a more dramatic and REALISTIC focus on the girls’ relationships, then it would be great. So we can all say ”I came for the moe, but stayed for the plot”
January 7th, 2010 - 07:53
I am hurt that you didn’t acknowledge that I’d found the perfect anime representation of you, a.k.a. Genma from Darker than BLACK: Ryuusei no Gemini.
January 8th, 2010 - 05:24
Admittedly, I do see myself in him
January 7th, 2010 - 15:41
K-On and Franchise Progression are two things that I don’t like hearing in the same sentence.
January 7th, 2010 - 17:27
Yamada actually said ‘moe shit!’? I like him.. or her or whatever it‘s gender is, I just don’t know him.. or her.
They hated K-ON! and still aired it!? This is why I love KyoAni. They take risks.. but too bad ALL their anime turns out very, very bad.
January 7th, 2010 - 22:31
Loll. I’m not sure if this is serious.
K-On! gets so much love and hate.
January 7th, 2010 - 23:58
No comment on those of you stuck-up goons that hate K-On, as everyone’s mileage varies.
As for this “retarded otaku”, this moe-shit is perfectly right up my alley, better than 8 wasted episodes of Endless Summer can ever offer.
Though even I wouldn’t waste so much money on too much K-On merchandise, just the mangas, the anime and the ero-doujin will do for me.
And if I’m lazy, I can find them all on the internets. Damn, I just said “lazy”, didn’t I? (Pun intended)
OTOH, I also like serious drama like Clannad and Toradora, so I do to an extent resent ignorant labelling of all K-On “fanatics” as mindless K-On-tards or anything derogatory.
March 23rd, 2010 - 10:23
That’s not a pun.
I feel dumber now. Thank you. :/

K-ONION 3: With a Vengence
January 8th, 2010 - 05:29
The other post, omo!
January 8th, 2010 - 05:06
Since this is an inside, inside joke that requires that you both watch K-ON! and play the Call of Duty series, allow me to explain.
MW1 (K-ON!) made by Infinity Ward (KyoAni)
World at War (Sora no Woto) made by Treyarch (A1 studios)
MW2 (K-ON! 2) made by Infinity Ward (Kyo Ani)
May 18th, 2010 - 18:10
I totally saw the parallel’s coming with KyoAni’s failure in Haruhi S2. Only that SnW is much more satisfying than W@W.
January 8th, 2010 - 05:27
@Kinny Riddle – Kyoto Animation shareholders thank you from the bottom of their
walletshearts@Yi – As do all popular things.
@Kairu – There’s a reason why Kyoto Animation are the industry leaders…
@Glo – It’s here to stay!
January 8th, 2010 - 16:55
You got me for awhile there
January 8th, 2010 - 19:34
I wonder if the moe version of the K-ON anime has affected the manga in anyway? I only read the first book but it seemed pretty standard. Kyoani really did let loose with all the moe shit when they made it into an anime.
January 8th, 2010 - 21:08
The second season will be the animated version of the doujin that fucks all their lives up. Yui ODs after the pressure of being the most popular and the one most clouded in scandal solo artists in japan. Mio becomes a shut in, jealous of Yui’s sucsess. Ritsu works in a low paying job. Mugi has a very ugly baby, whether it’s with a black guy or not can’t be confirmed. Azunyan becomes an akiba idol and falls into a massive depression after hearing of Yui’s suicide.
Why? Because Kyoani is fueled by otaku tears.
February 13th, 2010 - 00:33
Gasp! but, but… I love K-On! I think it’s delicioso!
…I’m not retarded enough to buy overpriced dvds or other expensive shit, though.
March 24th, 2010 - 20:14
Hey… K-ON? Serious??? Those two things don’t mix up well now…
But damn, I think the potential’s astronomous. A drama about how a bunch of girls start from being just a school club, to a small time indie gig to a big label!
In the very end, Azusa will get sick of pop rock and goes back to playing jazz with some black group, Tsumugi gets married to some old geezer and disappear from the radar, Ritsu will start her own band playing lame music based off ones with her old mates, people will just forget completely Mio, and Yui will die from her own shotgun after getting overdosed from cocaine!
May 15th, 2011 - 16:40
Well. K-On! was not so bad.
