What a load of dingo’s kidneys!
Man, you’ve got to feel sorry for that guy (and Canadiens in general); you can’t do anything anymore these days in some countries. You can’t even write some private texts about (fairly) mild subjects anymore? You’d probably be able to publish them over here.
I wonder if they’d put Nabokov in jail if he’d written Lolita in this day and age (and if he was a Canadien of course). ;)
So does it count as possession of child pornography if you have Nabokov’s Lolita in your library?
Do you have a link to the news story? I’m curious how they found out about it if he never shared it.
Yea I know right? Of course, if he really wrote it or himself and never tried to publish or share it, then know one would ever have known about it, so he must have done something to get it out in the open.
It’s so fucking irrational, since it’s written for yourself and no actual person is any way involved, that if there was real law you could just argue against it even if you didn’t know anything about the law:
What if a person writes some fiction for themselves in a language the judge can’t even understand?
What if a person writes some fiction of that kind for themselves in an invented language? Is that still a crime?
Taking into account that a story doesn’t even depict 2D lolis, that is, even if it’s irrational to charge someone for 2D pictures, when it comes to text would it still be a crime if that person wrote a ffanfic and then, for example, decided that a seemingly innocent word or even a code only they understood would stand for any word to hide the fact that it was depicting sex with minors? E.g. they decide that to say “a 14 years old girl” you write “a 8-32 prip girl” (= 8 * 1 and 8 * 4)
What if they wrote, using Chinese numerals, 十四 pri? (= 14 years old?)
I mean, when there’s an actual rape, there’s rape, it’s an actual fact you can’t twist it. But when you sentence someome for a crime that can be twisted so easily with words and languages, just by changing a text or making it cryptic, then there’s something really wrong in Canada and elsewhere.
oh, canada. how low you have fallen.
why dont the police officers get out there and arrest the people who are actually assulting the young lolis?
they should not be preoccupied with this pointless shit.
His wife abandoned him and his church possibly wants shit to do with him too (hypocrite asses). He will be labelled as a sex offender for a decade, all this for some fiction written for his own amusement.
I used to like Canada (maple syrup and gay marriage? fujoshi dream come true) but not anymore. I still like Matthew to bits though.
I saw this news and it actually kind of infuriated me. The article I read further explains that after psychiatric tests, he is at a very low risk of actually offending someone. I think this just shows society’s overreacting to anything mildly pedophilic.
The punishment does not fit the “crime”.
Doesn’t this make every single book that has themes of teen sex (and trust me, there’s rather a lot of those) child pornography under Canadian law? (Shouldn’t they take Lolita off the shelves?) Would it be so wrong to ask for a little consistency?
Canada, I congratulate you. At last moral reigns in the mind of man. At last fiction is but a word whose meaning fades from our understanding. At last, we are whole.
Canadians, there is a disease in the mind of man. Its symptom is lolicon. Its symptom is two-dimensional art. Its symptom is liberty. Its symptom is the Internet. The disease is human imagination.
But Canada, I congratulate you, for there is a cure for this disease. At the cost of the dizzying highs of individual freedom, we have suppressed its abysmal lows. And you, as a society, have embraced this cure: BAN. Now we are at peace with ourselves and human kind is one. Creativity is gone. Artistic license, a memory.
We are our own conscience now, and it is this conscience that guides us to rate LO-12, for morally degrading fictitious content, all those things that might tempt us to feel, again, and destroy them.
Canadians, you have won. Against all odds, and your own natures. You, have, survived.
So, if I write a Letter Bee (H) fanfic and post it on my blog I better not visit Canada or Australia, or if visit those countries, I better not bring a copy of Lolita, or Steven King’s It, or Alice McDermott’s Child of My Heart (winner of the national book award in 1999)? Damn, Canada, I thought silly shit like this only happened in the US or the middle east.
This whole arrest people over fiction is getting pretty close to preemptive arrests based on groundless suspicion and censorship. Imo, it’s at the paranoia point. It’s where you’re forced to sympathized or else you’re condemned (ie. if you show no response when a kid is murdered, you’re considered a heartless monster). In that sense though, I guess they’ve done a good job in educating the general populace to know that cihld abuse is wrong.
This is despicable. It is just fanfiction. He certainly was not trying to hurt any real children. This worries me as a fujoshi. I own manga where erm… things happen to characters who are clearly not yet legal adults. As much as I hate the way America is governed, I am happy that I do not live in Canada after reading this.
I have to agree with Toiski and YUKI though; Canada is a country I’ll never dare visit since I’m practically a criminal, what with all the yaoi and BL I read regularly.
trust me canada is shit and i live in canada every dry i fear reading or looking at those sites in fear of being woken up then next day being arrested and trust me i was one of the dum ones when i was younger doing this i had pics posted on my wall when i was like 15 until 18 and the police only entered once on a unrelated issue but but they dident see it man some time i feel like just going into the police station with a crudley hand drawn loli pic and challing them on what to do next man it like canada has hit rock bottem and then started to burrow even lower until you cant even see it anymore
WTF, I’ve never hear of been for possesing loli pics or writinf loli fan fic. Loli is make believe is isn’t real child porn, IT’s AN ANIME ART FORM, how the hell do you get arrest. It makes no sense
Dude you live in Hong Kong. The Party will enforce it’s own special brand of happy fun time on your face just because they feel like it… in about 40 years.

Given that you life in Australia, you might want to know that possession of loli hentai is enough to net you a criminal record =P
November 2nd, 2009
Oh, and I must note, this is legal opinion and not legal advice.
Sorry, just a precaution so that people can’t sue me in the event that what I say is wrong -_-;
November 2nd, 2009
I’m sure this is excellent advice for those who actually possess loli hentai. Yes sir
November 3rd, 2009

@mefloraine – At the next Canadian otaku event.
@Ben – The link is right there, just hover over the text!
November 3rd, 2009
@Shin – At the next biggest one? Anime North, next year.
November 3rd, 2009
Do you think that charges would have been the same if he drew instead of writing loli?
November 3rd, 2009
That person is silly. All he had to do was go through with Microsoft Word and do a “Replace All Instaces” of the number 13 with the number 18.

Unfortunately the ages of the characters in his stories apparently ranges from 8-12.
But yeah, that works.
