Confessions Of A Leecher

I finally hit it. I finally experienced first hand, the bane of internet users in Australia, otherwise known as the bandwidth limit. Despite knowing full well of the limitations imposed even before I set foot on this country, like an addict, I simply could not break away from my habit. As such, the speeds now have dwindled to the point where even loading my dashboard took an eternity. Consider this post both an epitaph and apology; My landlord has yet to notice the slowdowns though it is only a matter of time, with the envitable bill at the end of the month being proof of my misdeeds. If I do not respond to this post anytime soon, then you know I would have died a horrible death. That is all. See you when I do. Picture related; only one of those outcomes will materalize. Go figure which.

[UPDATE] He asked me and I quote "Does the internet feel slow to you?"

[UPDATE 2] HOW THE FLYING FUCK DO YOU AUSTRALIANS LIVE ON SUCH LIMITED BANDWIDTH WDSKDS;12!

  1. shin, good luck comrade.. see you next month after BW limit resets o/

make sure chris hansen’s men dont go knocking your door

  2. Scratch one country off of my “move to” list.

  3. Wow, Australia…didn’t know it was that bad. There’s not much I can say other than “good luck” ^^;

  4. Hope you’re able to survive for the rest of the month :)

  5. well technically the continent is in the middle of no where so im sure undersea cabling is expensive there…

    then again, tmnut ftw

  6. You need to find more water in the desert.

  7. oh noes your new life doesn’t seem to be working so well Shin

  8. I feel your pain shin, I’m in the middle of nowhere USA on satellite internet so I get a whopping 17gig a month. Needless to say being a anime fan makes that limit cry on a regular basis.

  9. This is why you can’t have nice things.

  10. Looks like you’re going to have to lessen your time on the internet.

Go throw a boomerang or something~

  11. You know… i had the same thing happen to me when i lived in the dorms in university. And for that whole year, I had to cut myself off from the internet (irc, anime, etc) becuase the cap was just killing me.

I ended up moing off campus after that and never again did i live in res.

moral of the story: bandwith caps SUCK, but i bet you knew that already XO

  12. GOOD LUCK MY BROTHER!! HOPE SEE U NEXT MONTH! BROTHER!!!

  13. Any chance of blogging via internet cafe?

  14. No “mates” here to share your pain with? Awww.

  15. @Omisyth, couldn’t agree more.
When I went to Sydney for vacation, I was like: Love at first sight, maybe I’ll move here someday.

And then I experienced the BW limit in my cousin’s house, and that love died an instant death. Good thing it was near the end of the month when I did my DLing, or my cousins will definitely cook me alive and I wouldn’t be here to tell the tale.

I think I’ll move to Tokyo after all.

Well, just wait for 13 more days until March 1st arrives. Until then, good luck surviving your landlord’s wrath.

I hear you get more BW at night than during daytime over there, so your strategy is just to concentrate on just two to three series (four would be pushing it) and only DL them at night. Can any Aussies confirm that? Or you have some better strategies?

  16. Looks like Shin is going to die soon/get arrested soon for porno of illegal types. Who else blogs here again, and will they mind a takeover? ;)

  17. You must construct additional pylons.

  19. If the snakes/spiders/platypuses/sharks/stingrays/jellyfish/crocodiles/fires/heat/drought/cyclones/wallabies don’t kill you, the bandwidth limits will  . Good luck Shin. Now I need to dig through the archives and figure out when you moved to Australia.

Auto bibliography? Why would anyone care what books he read  ? Now, if it was an auto-BIOGRAPHY, well, that would be just sick  .

  23. Especially if its an auto erotic biography (on this note, why can’t I edit? I recall being able to edit comments for 10 minutes after posting).

  24. At least you can get internet there.

Ah, I’m amazed how I got through that month on my grandpa’s farm in the mountains. Even when I did go to town a few hours away, most of the sites were censored by the Chinese government.

(At least the night sky was FREAKING AMAZING where he lives. I swear it was beautiful~ More stars than I have ever seen in my life and the Milky way as clear as day.)

  25. I feel your pain. Keep enduring it, better times will come.

manga’s last blog post..14/2 was yesterday? Oh fuck

  26. additional supply depots required.

well good luck swimming with the sharks. You shall be sorely missed.

  27. Here’s a handy tip Shin: find another ISP.

How do we survive? By drowning ourselves in insane amounts of work so we don’t have time to watch anything except for tinny bits. Either that, or we just rewatch things.

How much do you download anyway in 512k Malaysia?

  28. ah. glad to see someone else finds the dl caps ridiculous.

i just hope it sees me through to the end of 00 at least.

  29. Welcome to the world, my friend. That was how Australia was when I went there in 2005. Just using Skype already dried up the bandwidth that my bro-in-law told me to stop Skype-ing. Hey, Skype is cheaper than phone calls, but who am I to judge?

The next month, I remember I was surfing around Animepaper, and that too dried up the bandwidth. I was like, “Hey, it’s just anime wallpapers! What the…?!”

I don’t know how Australians live on the interwebs there! Just send any typical otaku over there, and they’ll be swimming back to their homelands come 2 weeks later! >:o

  33. …something about Australia having only 2 internet cables and having to share one with New Zealand. Hence bandwidth = precious and costly. Still, I shall think of your plight every time Malaysian internets decides to screw me up.

  34. What kind of crappy cardboard box internet provider are you with?

Our bandwidth isnt as bad as people seem to make out

  35. @Ex: I suppose it all depends on whether you are used to living with the bandwidth cap.

    Stifler’s last blog post..Tsukihime Update

  36. You could try and bribe your landlord into forgiving you.

  37. It is simple.
    You
    Pick
    And
    Choose
    And
    Don’t
    Watch
    Crap.

I managed to live with 3GB/3GB when I was there. As a result of good frugal living, I’m glad I selectively pick and watch stuff even today. Note THREE GB onpeak THREE off. These days the caps are luxurious compared to when broadband started out in Australia.

  38. PS. If you can, get your own phone line and get your own connection and whatever you do avoid this one ISP.
    – TELSTRA -

Choose 6 month contract or 1 year if you think you don’t mind burning off a month. Check out http://www.whirlpool.net.au for who not to go to.

The reason why it is so expensive is one word
    - TELSTRA – (again)

They monopolise the lastmile connection and almost all ISP use their DSLAM network. (Except for OPTUS cable and the some ISPs who operated their own DSLAMS). Data is expensive because Australia generates more incoming data than outgoing data resulting in a mismatch. The link providers have to pay for the different. And links are not cheap and Australia happens to be quite far from the major transit links.

If you think TM is an annoying monopoly, Telstra is even worse. TM at least kowtows to the government if you know your YBs. Telstra says FU to the pollies, FU to the ACCC and FU to the consumer. See how Telstra fights to prevent anything that would break its monopoly.

  39. Yes. Shinn’s landlord happens to be subscribing to BigPond which is Telstra’s broadband service. I pity the landlord who’s gonna be slapped for all that extra gigs of download on his monthly bill…unless he got the plan where the internet speed just gets throttled rather than paying for what you have overused.

  40. I rarely comment on blogs but I’d like to say your landlord must be with a crap provider. I have 60Gb limit here in Aus and it’s more than enough.

  41. You definitely need a better provider, I use optusnet and gets around 50GB, so i never have much trouble.

  42. fuhg.. i’m going to there for uni next year… think i need internet rehab now..

Lulz. I just downloaded 40gb over night due to a new 1tb hdd.

Ever considered moving to Norway or Sweden Shin? Might be a bit colder than you’re used to, but we have good interbutts to make up for it.

  44. Isn’t there a deadly jellyfish off the Great Barrier Reef? If all else fails, find an hier and go jump in instead of facing the wrath. That’s plan B. Plan A is to wait out the storm and try not to die. The choice is yours. Good luck Shin…

  45. @TrHaMo: Hell, he doesn’t have to go that far. Just walk into the bush and a black mamba will get him. Or head to a creek and get eaten by a crocodile. One of the cool things about Australia is that everything wants to fucking KILL YOU. (Not literally, but close enough that the rest of the world gets to point and laugh).

@ Shin: Hey, its been 5 days. DID you get eaten and/or murdered?

  46. Australia is the land of the badass. If the sealife doesn’t kill you, there’s the snakes, if not, the spiders, if not them, there’re plants.

And there’s always… THE YEARLY BBQ!

  47. @Di Gi Kazune:
An anglophiles orgasm, guess the 3 countries.
Throw another on on the barbie, eh? Righto.

  48. 7 days — dead yet?

  49. For some reason or another, I’m still alive(barely), since the only way to really kill me is through castration, as I would voluntarily commit suicide at the thought of not being able to fap anyway. I only have only a limited time online, so I won’t be replying to you guys just yet. When I’m able to, I’ll be updating this post on what has transpired thus far, so check up on it if you’re interested. :thx:
