Comic Fiesta 2008 – Day 01

And now you the know the landmark featured in Comic Fiesta's CM.

If there's one advantage about entering the hall early, it would be being able to see booths being set up, which was quite the rare sight.

The first and last time you'd ever see those Ranka prints. Yet pre-emptive advantage, being able to buy stuff ahead of everyone else. Surprisingly CDS didn't stock Sheryl  ones, though it's hardly my concern.

Despite the bad times, it's nice to see people still willing to dig deep into their pockets to pay for the entrance fee which was rather expensive.

The trio from Odin Sphere, an underrated RPG title for the PS2 marred by pitiful load times that brought my console down to its knees, but I digress. Interestingly enough, the cosplayer on the left has a penchant for cosplaying characters from said genre, though it's the first time I've seen her pulling off a male character.

From the depths of hell, The Emperor cometh. I personally found this Krauser to be rather tame than all out menacing, though this is probably due to her(?) stature and the lack of random raperaperaperape. On the other hand, this is the perfect Krauser-tan cosplay.

I can never come to hate Ranka, even if this cosplayer didn't exactly (ノゝ∀・)~キラ properly. Well, actually, she did, but that shot was ruined by the obnoxious emcee pointing at her, so I'm not including it.

Add the ones from AFA'08, and I think it's safe to say I've seen every iteration of Sheryl there is.

That's not how you cosplay as Haruki! Regardless, props to this bro for his take on this overly done character.

And one for old time's sake; Mint. Galaxy Angel was among the first few titles I've watched in my pre-broadband ages, though I never went beyond season 1.

Rurouni Kenshin and random Shinsengumi person. I don't remember the headgear?

One day, Miku cosplay will get old and people will start complaining nonstop about the lack in variety. For now, here's yet another.

When calling someone Junk does not carry negative intonations.

I found this pose to be rather homosexual in nature, but Setsuna calls it yuri. To each his own.

Feedback

Booths Galore: True to its purpose, there was a staggering number of stalls offering a wide variety of doujin merchandise, to which I actually found myself shelling out dough to purchase,  and those who know me can tell you; I'm not one who willingly parts with money.

Cosplay Eyecandy: I had a lot of faith in the turnout of cosplayers for this year's CF, and it was in no way misplaced. There was a decent variety, with little fail, be it disproportioned cosplayers or Narutardation. This is especially true in Day 2.

Surprise Rear Intrusion: While unintentional, I found myself being able to walk in and out of the event hall a number of times without flashing my press tags. Don't know about the main entrance, but it was the rear one which was not properly guarded. From what I understand, the personnel stationed here were volunteers on rotating shifts, so that probably explains the indifference...

Can't See Shit Captain: Hall lighting was pathetic. Good thing Setsuna was around with his DSLR. I dread thinking how the pictures would have turned out with my P&S.

Say What: I didn't like the emcees. Their banter was crudely Malaysian, and I found myself breaking half a smirk at most at the duo's antics. Obviously, I'm alone in thinking this, since they did work the crowd like they were supposed to, though the average Malaysian is susceptible to anything that is remotely humurous. Then again, this is coming from someone who struggles to smile even for photographs.

With that and a number of minor detractions like Malaysian timeliness, Day 1 was good, even if I could have entertained myself further by catching the Group Cosplay competition, though I gave it a miss because I was busy hanging out with the figfags, to the point I didn't even notice the event was in progress.... That's it for now,  do look forward to Day 2's collaborative post!

  4. Screw Sheryl Ranka all the way!!!! I dont know why but I’m starting to see more guys trying to cosplay as Haruhi :???: and some of them were quite scary

  5. Ahh… The Temple of Nod! There be lurks a Tiberium Missile in there!

  6. You’re not the only one who didn’t like the emcees.

Agreed that Krauser wasn’t all out menacing.

Also, I didn’t get pics of the yuri.

  8. there is one more version of Sheryl that we have not seen yet. That is the one from episode 24 when she sang Iteza Gogo Kyuji Dont be Late. It is similar to the one posted here except that her uniform is red instead of blue.

And yes i think that last photo was yuri and i wont take no for an answer.

  9. I’m in love with fat haruhi.

  10. I was shitlexed by the gruesome view of one of the cosplayers. He/She wore a bloody thong and we can actually see her/his panties or whatever.

    Ugh. What a disgrace.

The only cosplayers I’ve loved was the Obi-Wan Kenobi, Allen Walker, L and Sasuke. Oh.. and the Shiki-gal.

I am satisfied with the daojins. Too bad there wasn’t enough DGM in them.

  11. Your disregard for Sheryl is an impertinence to me!

  12. omg..teh Haruhi..

  13. lol at the rear entry. basically what you said, and the fact that many of the TFM folks abused my pass by taking it and moving in/out the rear entrance with it…. lol to lack of ID for the pass itself (eg: my name, and/or picture on the actual pass)

i am just hikki’ing at the TFM booth or the main stage after all and dont really require the pass much (even on the mainstage, no one checked my pass until the “filtering process”)

and yea, im pretty much the only media guy with a P&S, and the pictures makes me /rage at my P&S moar T_T

the emcees… all i can say is that they try TOO DAMN HARD.

  14. Was that a fugly guy cosplaying Haruki, or a fugly gay cosplaying Haruhi?

Anyhow, no complaints with the yuri pose. I make my girl classmates do it most of the time.

  15. FUCKING LIGHTING #$#@^#%$er^$%&@!e#$

Well security has never been a strong point for fan-run events so yeah.

I honestly didn’t like Alfred the first year he was on, with all his facepalm-inducing jokes, but I’ve slowly become to like him. Then again, there really isn’t too many talented emcees for local ACG events, so you gotta love what you get.

In a lot of ways, it’s better to serve the lowest common denominator than to have lame emcees trying to crack jokes only 10% of the crowd will get.

  16. OMG- I think you have teh stalker on yr tail shin

In the 4th picture here- if you look at the bottom left you’ll see a guy in glasses and a white tee- sitting in the same row as the laughing girl in black attire.

Now if you look in the suzaku/lulu cosplay pics of AniFest 2008 and look this photo:

is this the same guy in the background??? Or am I KrAzY like a fox….

  17. All I can say is… Shame on you for not watching more Galaxy Angels!!!

    @Mini

All the girls got tired of Haruhi, but for guys it’s a new experience altogether, since traps are becoming a trend nowadays. :P
