Ah, fansubbers, whatever would we do without them? For the most part, I’m appreciative of their efforts in undertaking this thankless job in bringing anime to the masses, though at the same time, there occasionally certain quirks(to put it lightly) about these people that just makes me raise an eyebrow, like so ¯\(ºдಠ)/¯
Of course, being nothing more than a leecher, my opinions does not really hold much weight, so when I watched this docu-RANT-ary by a self proclaimed Otaking, certain sentiments which I shared but could not express without drawing flak was voiced out by this person. His takes a jab at how the proliferation of fansub groups today have brought a negative impact on the community as a whole with the following examples:
- Inconsistent translations
- Overuse of translator’s notes
- Annoying karaoke typesetting
Along with a slew of other detractions, he regards today’s fansubbers as unprofessional compared to the ones in the old days. Regardless of how you view it, one cannot deny that the entire thing was somewhat one-sided, as he meticulously chose the best(worst?) examples to bring his point across. With the one person I know from the community not really providing me with a satisfactory reply as he wasn’t perturbed by it one single bit, I had to then wait for that other (ex)fansubber to voice out her thoughts before making this post.
What I got was a person who was in full agreement with Otaking’s take on the matter, be it on the fansubbers themselves or the ungrateful lot they cater to, which Hinano responds by shoving corn cubs up their butts. I got the same treatment as well, but that’s an entirely different story.
As usual, I round up this post with image spam, this time highlighting random fansubber facepalm/lulz inducing moments.
In the end, while Otaking does seem right in the matter, I guess you can’t really complain since it is all free, and they’re doing it out of their own free will. Either put up with it or start learning how to read moonrunes?. As for me, I’m a masochist, so even enduring eye cancer like the ones mentioned doesn’t really have an effect on me, other than make my penis harder. I’m actually pissed about this documentary shit. The guy makes only a few valid points, and the rest is simply constant whining and regurgitation of the same arguments throughout the whole thing. Repetition is good, but it’s not effective here. I just posted a blog about it.

I’d rather have watched the video without the mock narrator voice in the background, with you know, ‘proper’ subtitles instead. On one hand, was worth the chuckles at some of the *smacks forehead*-type subs, on the other, the whole thing reeks of “Look at me on my high horse!” which I don’t tolerate well…

i knew yuu would blog about this after reading over at hinano’s.
i actually prefer all those translator notes and stuff but if the font is waaaayy too big that it covers half the screen (refer image #4 from top), then that really sucks.
If a lot of people are fansubbing series, I tend to stick to familiar groups than branch out try new ones. Maybe this is why I avoid this sort of BS floating on my screen?

Honestly, I don’t really care. Except for the ‘translator’s note’, that one gets on my nerves. It’s annoying to pause the anime just to read the explanation. Especially in a very important scene, the notes will ruin it. Sometimes I can bear with it, but most of the time, I can’t..
But most of the fansubs I watched are okay. No problems with it so far. And we can’t complain either because we get it for free..

I have alot of respect for fansubbers, without them I’d have to wait decades for dub-titled anime since I live in Ireland
Saying that bad translations make me LOL, but I still appreciate that they tried! Overly large font is just irritating though
I don’t mind TL notes, except like in the ‘ganbatte’ or Light screens up there. Couldn’t you… just… ? lolwut indeed. I tend to download MKVs anymore so if something is irritating I turn the subs off for the scene.
But the insulting smarter-than-thou tone can be irritating, especially when grammar is rarely 100% right. fansubbers used to just translate stuff, now I feel like I’m constantly being told to “google it” as if I’m some kind of neanderthal.
The bird smiley, though… pure awesome. And don’t get me wrong, I still think the bulk of them are still doing it for fun, and don’t let egos or a sense of entitlement get in the way of just doing what they’re there to do. I could put together a pretty long list of groups who I’m really thankful for.

I’m on the “I hate notes floating on the screen” bandwagon, like Setsukie said, those just ruin {a scene in} an anime. -_- It’s okay for anime like Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei and Pani Poni Dash because those have references all over the place and is needed to fully enjoy them.
But, like everyone says, fansubbers just do it for fun and aren’t “professional”, so I don’t mind Karaoke effects, special moves effects, or reading ‘onee-sama’! ^_^

Karaoke’s are fine to me whether they’re there or not, since I don’t watch the OP sequence after the first few times, so I’m not affected by it. Yes, some shows just require those notes, such as the ones you’ve mentioned, though I wouldn’t mind it being omitted altogether, since they were the part of reason why subs for SZS were so slow to begin with.

Haha those screenshots are really entertaining- the first one with the wall of glowy font was really over the top, I’ve never seen subs like that before!
But as lots of people probably already said, it’s kind of pointless to complain much about a free service…when you should technically be buying this stuff (or waiting to be able to buy it) as the alternative…
And I like getting all the detailed notes, even if I have to pause to read the notes, it’s kind of like pop-up video trivia…otherwise I would miss lots of the jokes! and I like the kareoke too…I sound like a nerd but I like to try and pick up some japanese words from the kareoke…
