My depravity knows no boundaries. Honestly, this was one of the shows I've looked forward to from Spring, because I was really curious on how a mainstream yaoi series would look like. Sure we've got plenty of BL type shoujo material and even implied homoeroticism in other shows are aren't even supposed to be gay, but to have an anime solely focusing on that genre is the sole reason why I tried this with a gleeful sense of perverted anticipation.

Returning from college, Misaki Takahashi finds his elder brother, Takahiro, playfully making out with an unknown stranger. They sure waste no time on this. The stranger in question turns out to be Akihiko Usami, Takahiro's close friend, who's a bit too close for comfort if you ask me. Anyway, after some circumstances or another, Usami ends up being Misaki's private tutor, and we know that in Japan, tutors go their way out to provide more than just basic education. Sure enough, after stumbling across some yaoi novels written by Usami, Misaki receives some form of SURPRISE BUTTSECKS. Misaki's quite adorable with his tsun tsun attitude as he rejects Usami's advances in the beginning, only to give in and be subdued by the latter who deftly caresses him to the point orgasm, or at least that's how it looked like, since Studio DEEN decided to literally cockblock viewers by placing a huge vision obstructing shadow in strategic places.

The duo's relationship is put to the test after Takahiro introduces his fiance to Misaki and Usami. They are both shocked by the announcement and as it turns out, Usami isn't the only one who harbors feelings for the soon to be married token straight guy. Misaki goes into a fit of rage and runs off, with Usami "close behind" to console the latter. After some girly man tears, our resident seme goes in for the kill and plants a nice hot one on the sobbing uke. Emm, delicious male liplock bonding. Although it was meant to be a dramatic and emotional moment, I couldn't help but guffaw at how terribly lame that scene was fleshed out, ignoring the fact it's two guys kissing. Ever since then, the two become closer than ever before, with the inevitable manly loving that follows up.

Uh, that's it? The first episode seriously left me underwhelmed as I expected much more yaoi sexing than this, although from a female's perspective, this show seems passable. Really? I guess the keyword here is mainstream, as this is the kind of material for those beginners who want to delve into the genre but is unsure of where to begin. I'm no expert on the subject matter, but I've seen better. Hur hur. After watching that awesome yaoi parody episode in the second season of Genshiken, I was hoping Junjou Romantica could top or at least match that, but alas, all I got was some low budget gay anime with not enough boys love to entertain me, let alone satisfy the cravings of yaoi fangirls that will no doubt be all over this. Despite its flaws, this is a pretty decent slice of life romantic comedy that explores the forbidden relationship between tutor and student, well apart from the fact they're both male, but hey, don't let that stop you.

    Rofl well Sukisho, Gravitation & Gakuen Heaven are also mainstream BL…with Princess Princess not too far behind. Damn I feel like some kind of BL anime expert even though I don’t watch it for the BL but rather for the humor xD;; BL animes are usually pretty funny!

    The reason why Misaki punched the wall was because he knew Usami has unrequited love for his brother for a really, really long time. They were talking about it earlier. The way the brother introduced Usami to his fiance, the way Usami looked shocked only to act as if nothing was wrong tells Misaki Usami plans to carry his secret love to his grave. It’s painful, that’s what Misaki was pissed about, both at his brother and Usami. The reason Misaki cried wasn’t for himself, it was for Usami.

    I hate all yaoi anime. But if there’s 1 person I’ll acknowledge as a decent yaoi manga, it’s this person. There’s a reason why Nakamura Shungiku is famous, and it’s sure as hell not because of her lame sex scenes. :-)

    It’s painful, that’s what Misaki was pissed about, both at his brother and Usami.
    I should rephrase, since it’s not really right. What happened in that scene was that Takahiro said to Usami’s face that he’s the first person he want to introduce his fiancee to. It was harsh because Misaki knew Usami had never told Takahiro of his feelings, nor will Takahiro ever know,so when he sees the way Usami is forcing himself, Misaki loses control by punching the wall. He tend fumbles for an excuse and grabs Usami out, and from there, he apologizes for his outburst and starts crying for him.

    I thought that scene was the most well-done in the whole 20 minutes.

    You should stay until the second pairing comes out. The first is MEH to the max, but the second is where it gets admittedly decent.

    Dun get me wrong I don’t have a problem with blogs bashing shows, to each his own anyway considering I make fun of a lot of shows myself, but at least get your facts straight first. =x

    Of course I do. I said I was against yaoi anime. Most of them are funny and by funny I mean pure crap. I never said I was against yaoi itself. :)

    To each his own as they say tho id advise you to only start ‘snickering’ when the subs come out as its not that far off to say you just watched your own spinoff of JR from the looks of things. :-) The sex scenes WERE lulz tho, this I can agree.

    Objective hm I don’t know about that I mean I laugh at half the comments about junjou elsewhere coz they’re are all about “HOMG EW GAYZ SICK!!!” by guys and yet they keep looking anyway which sends me warning signals that says they’re secretly gay. :-P Plenty of lulz for me going around there hunny. :-3

    Well, seeing that this is aired on tv, you can’t really expect the full yaoi. So. And I thought that the animation was good quality compared to some other BL anime/OVA’s. Besides, this is the first ever 24 episode series BL animation that is aired on tv. Personally, I think studio DEEN did a good job. And for uh… those who were curious, I heard from some Japanese audience that the shadow in the sex scenes would be removed on the DVD releases.

    *grins* Well, Junjou Romantica is pretty tame for yaoi… yet it’s probably one of my favourites because of the humour and the plotlinee. If you really want to see some thing with more *cough* yaoi sexing *cough* try Sensitive (Porn)ograph. Or the infamous Enzai (which is majorly creepy. *was traumatized by it*)
