Word Of The Day : Weaboo

Posted by: Shin

A negative term directed to anyone overly obsessed with Japanese culture to the point where they become annoying.Used frequently on the image boards of 4chan.

Most weaboos are uneducated about their obsession of choice and are often noobs who are overly zealous, trying to impress others with their otaku knowledge. Another trait of a weaboo is their desire to "be Japanese".

While the two terms are often fused together, weaboos are very different from anime fans or enthusiasts. A fan may be just as enthusiastic and knowlegable
about Japanese culture, mainly anime, but they neither boast about their knowledge nor call themselves otaku(because of its known negative connatation). - UrbanDictionary.com

  1. It’s spelled “Weeaboo”
    http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=weeaboo

also, here’s the PBF comic the word originally came from http://pbfcomics.com/?cid=PBF071-Weeaboo.gif

  2. Cringes So that’s why everyone gets annoyed around me.

But in all honesty, calling yourself an otaku does not always make you a Weeaboo. If you know and fully acknowledge the meaning, your not a Weaboo. For instance: I never leave the house, have no love life, and next to no social life. I have nothing to do but watch anime and play video games all day. I am, in every sense of the word, an otaku and because I realize that that’s putting myself down, I’m not being a Weeaboo for saying it.

    Feel free to laugh now.

  3. @… – No. It’s only the creepy as hell people who go to those anime cons and dress up as anime characters, act like them while saying desu or something, and think their little vocab like ‘kawaii’ would make them blend in with the Japanese culture. Another example is is a white person (I’m using white to classify, not discriminate.) stretching their eyes to attempt to look Japanese.

Plain Otakus who just watch anime and play the games are no where near that creepy.

  4. Hahahaha! That’s Jonathan Underwood definition of weeaboo. He thinks he is a celebrity in Japan because he did a show in japan and gets paid to do j-vlogs. He just graduated at ASU this month sooo I don’t have to see his weeaboo face again. Oh! and his major is Japanese and Education and he move out this summer to Japan to start working there and to live.

  5. The word weaboo always confuses me. It apparently takes on the same meaning as ‘wapanese’ which is short for white japanese, so does that mean that people of black or latino background who are crazy about japanese culture and want to be japanese cannot possibly be ‘weaboos’? Also, the word ‘wapanese’. If someone is, in actuality half white and half japanese, should they find this insulting? Though, as 3. said, I consider myself a typical otaku as well and not weaboo, if i did fit the weaboo stereotype would I still be considered one, even though I’m not japanese but still half asian? I somewhat doubt it. :???:

  6. @Freya – In response to to the previous post, ‘weeaboo’ has become popular because it is more general-purpose than Wapanese, although it was originally identical. These days, Weeaboo is colorblind, and can be attributed to blacks, whites, and even asians…everyone except actual Japanese.

For example, if you’re a Japanese-american kid who fits the sterotype, you’re still as weeaboo as they come, though you may get cut a bit more slack about it.
